Karytaina is
a mountain village in Arcadia (on Gortinia),
located 20km southwest of Megalopolis at an altitude of 500 meters. In early 13th century a castle was built there and the area was one of the 12 baronies set up by the Franks in the Peloponnese. |

In 1320 A.D Andronikos Palaiologos Asanis occupied the castle. Of the 12 baronies, only 3 remained in Frankish hands. An attempt to recover the castle on 5 July 1465A.D was unsuccessful. |

During the war between the Turks and Venetians Karytaina was temporarily under the dominion of the Venetians. According to the census of 1700 the region of Karytaina numbered 121 villages and 11,750 inhabitants. |

Karytaina is built on the mountain side, located at ancient Vrenthis The area produced grain and silk. There was also a carpet industry and an outdoor market that operated every Monday. |

The Karytaina was the headquarters from the first days of the revolution of 1821. The Karytaina Board was a local organization to coordinate the fight. Created on April 28 and appointed Theodoros Kolokotronis as leader of all local forces. On March 29 Kolokotronis' 6000 men had gathered and tried to seize Karytaina, but with the first exit of the Turks, the army was disbanded. |
