SAMIKO (Beach)

The beach below Samiko, one of the largest in the Peloponnese, is only 15 km from Ancient Olympia and Hotel Europa
The Samiko, also known as Sami, Samos, Sami, Makistos, was the ancient city of Elis. The city was in the modern Kaiafa in the country of the Kafkonon at Trifylia. It was founded by Pelasgians in Homeric times and was known as Arini, then settled on naming it Samos. Later came the Minyes Of Lesvos who named it Makistos, after their leader.

To Makisto came Atreus and Thyestis when they were exiled by Pelops from Pisa. When Pausanias passed through, the city was called Samia.
The temple of Poseidon was in the city, surrounded by a holy olive grove and the temple of Hercules Makistiou. The Temple of Poseidon was next to the sea, and Tilemachos arrived there from Ithaca and found Pylians sacrificing to Poseidon.

Near the town is the Cave of the Nymphs with the Anigridon source of spa water. Those who came to heal from the water source first prayed in the temple of the Nymphs and then walked in the river named Anigro. The cave and the river today are part of the spa Kaiafa.
Today the temple of Poseidon and the ancient citadel around Lake Kaiafa and the village of Kato Samiko have been excavated.
